How to create a professional tradie brand

You do not need a brand agency. You need one mark, used the same way every time, and the discipline not to change it.
Most trade branding advice is written for businesses with marketing budgets. This is not that. This is what actually distinguishes a trade business that looks established from one that does not, in rough order of impact.
1. Consistency is the whole game
A mediocre logo used identically on the ute, the trailer, the invoice, the shirt and the sticker will beat an excellent logo used four different ways. Consistency is what signals that a business has been around, and it is free.
Practically: save one master file, in one arrangement, and use only that. The moment you have two versions, you will end up with five.
2. Two colours, and one of them is probably not needed
Trade branding works best when it is high contrast and restrained. Dark on light or light on dark, plus at most one accent. Gradients, drop shadows and three-colour logos do not survive being printed at 100 mm on a toolbox or embroidered on a shirt.
A useful test: does the logo still work in one colour? If not, it will let you down constantly.
3. Legibility beats cleverness
A logo on a vehicle is read at speed, at an angle, in poor light, by someone who is not trying. Thin, script and highly stylised type all fail those conditions. Choose something plain and set it large.
4. Say what you do in the name or next to it
"Hartley & Co" tells a stranger nothing. "Hartley Plumbing" does the work of an entire advertisement. If your name is already set and does not include the trade, put the trade on the line underneath — permanently, everywhere.
5. Apply it to everything cheap first
- Vehicle doors and trailer
- Toolboxes and site boxes
- Equipment you install and leave behind
- Quote and invoice documents
- Shirts, once the rest is done
6. Then stop changing it
The temptation to refresh a logo every couple of years is the single most common way trade businesses undo their own recognition. The value is entirely in the repetition. Pick something plain enough that you will not be embarrassed by it in five years, then leave it alone.
