Measure the clear flat area, then choose a decal about two-thirds of that width. A door panel on most utes takes a 200 mm to 300 mm decal comfortably. Do not run a decal across a body line or a panel gap — it will lift at the crease within months, and it looks wrong immediately.

Wash with plain soapy water, rinse and dry fully — wax and polish stop the adhesive keying. Work in shade between roughly 10°C and 30°C. Tape the decal along its top edge, hinge it up, peel the backing, then squeegee from the centre outward in overlapping strokes. Leave it 24 hours before washing the vehicle.

Reflective vinyl costs more and is worth it in exactly one situation: your vehicle is regularly parked or driven where being seen at night matters. Emergency plumbers, roadside work, after-hours electrical and anyone parking on unlit streets. Otherwise it is a spend without a return.

Vinyl of this type is designed to be removable, and warming it with a heat gun or hairdryer makes it come away cleanly. Adhesive residue can be lifted with an adhesive remover. Long-exposed decals on older or resprayed paint are the case to be careful with — the paint under a decal ages differently to the paint around it.
They solve different problems. A decal looks permanent because it is — flush to the panel, no edge, no lifting at highway speed. A magnetic sign comes off, which matters if the vehicle is also personal or leased. We currently print decals only.
